Search for Something Search for Someone
AltaVista
The original. Search the Web and newsgroups. Has useful features to help refine searches. AltaVista can even translate web pages for you - all part of the Babelfish service.
Google
Our favourite engine, even if it does only work on whole words.  Search the Web and newsgroups.  Google even manages to cache all the pages that it indexes.  Quite useful if the site you're after is busy. Google was in beta when we first visited. It has come a long way since then.
WhoWhere
An original people search service.  Look for an e-mail or telephone number.
    Search the Newsgroups
Northern Light
Have to admit to not knowing about this one until 03/99. It claimed then to be the second largest after AltaVista - reportedly indexing over 45% of the WWW.  Aside from its size, this engine is distinctive because of the - charged - content it offers in addition to web searches.
Metacrawler
Not a search engine as such, but a service that will pass your requirements to a number of search engines, collate the results and then pass them back to you. Pretty neat.
Google Groups
Dejanews, the original newsgroup search service, sadly ended in March 2001.
Fortunately its vast and historically significant archive has been acquired by Google who, at the time of writing, is now bringing the new service up to speed. The Internet community holds its breath...

Yahoo
Not just a search engine, but also a researched, structured and maintained collection of links. Just work your way down its clearly defined structure to find the information you're after. Failing that, just fill in a search form and let Yahoo do the rest. There's even a UK and Ireland version too.
HOTBOT
The Wired search engine. Search the World Wide Web and newsgroups. If you feel the need, you can request HOTBOT to make sure that the pages it searches for have graphics, video or sound in them.
